Trails: Into the Woods   Epping Forest

Forests loom large in the imagination.  Places of both shelter and danger in fairytale and myth, once one has entered the woods there is no guarantee of re-emergence.  Today the woods have lost much of their darkness, having been whittled away to insignificant pockets of land, but periodically they come back to haunt us.  A child goes missing.  A body is found in the woods.

For this installation, hundreds of lollipops were planted and left in Epping Forest. Drawing both on fantasy and nightmare, Trails: Into the Woods plays on the childlike delight at lollipops, their bright swirling colours instantly appealing and evocative and yet their sudden and unexpected appearance troubling.
