Points of Contact

Ink on broken eggshells, 2013

Points of Contact links to the Freudian idea that past psychological trauma often manifests physically in the body if not worked through. Overlaid are two outlines – one of the body in childhood, and one of the adult body, lined up but slightly offset so that they remain distinct. Marked with an X are sites on the body which, as a child, were linked to specific incidents and which, in adulthood, manifested as eczema sites, tearing through flesh with fingernails to try to remove the memories. Referencing the myth of Daphne, the limbs of both child and adult bodies turn into stylised laurel branches, erasing them and so making them safe, but at what cost?
